Respite care is an essential part of the overall support that families may need when caring for someone with a disability or chronic health needs at home. Respite care can be provided in the family home, through community involvement, or in various home-like settings. FamiliesThe responsibilities of ongoing 24-hour care can be stressful. Taking a break is extremely beneficial for many families of individuals with special needs – a welcome opportunity to re-energize and enjoy some personal time. ParticipantsRespite provides individuals with special needs a chance to socialize, increase confidence, develop new relationships and contribute to community life. CommunityA flexible range of respite care services builds a stronger, more caring community with support networks that are inclusive and caring of all citizens. Our Staff and Volunteersare ExceptionalTrained Respite Workers carry out the duties usually performed by family caregivers in the daily support of individuals with special needs. They ensure the safety and well-being of each individual. Many Respite Workers have post-secondary education in the field of human services, such as gerontology, developmental services or early childhood education. Respite care is also provided by trained volunteers who wish to share their time and bring someone new into their lives. A positive attitude, a strong belief in community inclusion and respect for each individual’s strengths, abilities and personal choice are the distinguishing qualities of Wesway staff and volunteers. |
